The first Pilot came out 20 years ago and was a clean, but boxy SUV. Based on the platform that begat both the ‘larger’ 1999 Honda Odyssey and the 2001 Acura MDX. To amplify its truck-like bonafides, it even sported a ‘4WD’ badge in place of a pedestrian ‘AWD’ badge that most crossovers have. The second generation Pilot got a bit boxier yet when redesigned in 2009. But the third and current generation Pilot soften up its shape and while still clean, aimed for a more elegant and perhaps even minivan-like look.
But much like the 2023 CR-V, the 2023 Pilot looks to return to its roots. It would be a ‘safe bet’ to expect the latest in safety tech and features, some of which were conspicuously absent on the current gen Pilot (aroundview camera, for one). Larger exterior and interior dimensions, the new TrailSport trim level, perhaps even more power is on the table. Speaking of, stay tuned for more detail on available powertrains. Could we finally see the long rumored Pilot Plug in Hybrid? Or even just a Pilot Hybrid?
